ESPERANZA MEANS HOPE
In 2021, Better Shelter teamed up with The Other Ones Foundation to provide easily assembled and accessible housing solutions for the Esperanza state-sanctioned encampment in Austin, Texas. This 20-minute short peeks behind the curtain of the unhoused crisis, how organizations such as Better Shelter are making community housing more humane, and why non-profits such as The Other Ones Foundation are emboldened to find real solutions to the issues at hand. Patchwork Piñata’s film showcases the ingenuity of Better Shelter’s structures and the success of its implementation in the Esperanza encampment. Additionally, our film team captures intimate moments with unhoused community members, as well as engaging interviews with staff members including Chris Baker, founder of The Other Ones Foundation and a featured “hero” in Season 6 of Netflix’s Queer Eye.
